Ferdinand is Austrian Archduke by birth, a son of Holy Roman Emperor Franz I and Maria Theresa of Austria. He was the founder of the House of Austria-Este and Governor of the Duchy of Milan between 1765 and 1796. He was also designated as the heir to the Duchies of Modena and Reggio, but never reigned owing to the Napoleonic Wars. On 15 October 1771 Ferdinand married Maria Beatrice Ricciarda d'Este; they had ten children. Ferdinand died 24 December 1806, aged 52, in Vienna.
Maria Carolina of Austria (Maria Carolina Louise Josepha Johanna Antonia; 13 August 1752 – 8 September 1814) was Quenn of Naples and Sicily, the wife of King Ferdinand IV and III. Born an Austrian archduchess, the thirteenth child of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis I, she married Ferdinand as part of an Austrian alliance with Spain, where Ferdinand’s father was king.
