Charlotte Augusta, Princess of Wales, the only child of George, the Prince Regent and later King George IV, was born on January 7, 1896.
As a child, she was raised apart from her parents. She was close to her grandfather, King George III until his “madness” made contact impossible. She was pudgy and of medium height. She was considered a little rowdy for a person of her position.
IN 1816 Charlotte married Leopold of Saxe-Cogerg-Sallfeld, King of the Belgians.
She died November 6, 1817 from complications of giving birth to a still-born son.
Had she lived, she would have become Queen of England in 1820, rather than Victoria, the daughter of Prince Edward, Georges younger brother.
In her memory, Leopold named one of his daughters by his second marriage, Charlotte, who is better known as the empress Carlota of Mexico.
