Son of Emperor Leopold II and Maria Louisa of Spain. In 1790 married Louisa Maria Amelia Teresa of the Two Sicilies, and in 1821, Maria of Saxony.
Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1790 to 1801, when Bonaparte (q.v.) forced him to cede Tuscany to the Bourbons of Parma. Ruled Tuscany again after Napoléon's fall (1814), until his death.
